IMMIGRATION BILL IN THE SENATE
Adjustment of Status to Registered Provisional Immigrant Status and "DREAM ACT"
The Immigration Bill which targets those individuals who are in unlawful status, if passed, will allow those individuals to apply to adjust their status to Registered Provisional Immigrant Status. The bill is currently being debated before the Senate with the hope that the bill will be voted on before the July 4 recess. The current bill is targeted to those individuals who are in unlawful status who may be eligible to apply to adjust their status to the legal status of Registered Provisional Immigrant Status. Dependents of such individuals may also be eligible to apply. Those who qualify will be issued a work permit and permission to travel abroad. The Immigration Billl will be debated in the House, and may undergo numerous changes before the final vote. At present the bill proposes certain eligibility criteria such as the individual residing in the United States prior to December 31, 2011 and maintained continuous physical presence. Also, in order to be eligible, an individual must not have been convicted of more than two misdemeanors. The bill also addresses "The Dream Act" for the children who entered the United States under the age of 16.
The House may propose its own version of the immigration bill which will be debated and voted upon. It is expected that the Senate and House eventually will come to a compromise as to the language of the bill and a final version of the bill benefiting illegal individuals and their dependents may become a law by the end of September, 2013.
We strongly urge individuals to consult with a professional immigration attorney once the bill is passed.
